THE Bomberman!
Date of Review: Nov 21, 2001
The Bottom Line: Bomberman perfection!!! Great Visuals, Sound, endless replay value, and it is the BEST Bomberman! 'Nuff said.
Listen up all unenlightened Bomberman brothers! The Sega Saturn's version of Bomberman, "SaturnBomberman", is the best version ever! Remaining true to the old formula (a thousand curses upon the wretched N64 versions!) this game is a true gem, the type your friends and you will fondly recall years from now.
The graphics are beautiful, cartoonish bliss that seem to suck you into this wonderous game! The game also makes good use of the systems CD powers with way cool Anime style story scenes.
The music is very fitting of the bubble gum atmosphere with a more mysterious music fitting more dark and ominous looking boards. The bombers voices are very cutesy which is allright.
Playcontrol is simple and similar to the old BM with the good ol' boot still in tact along with detonators, flames, more bombs, gloves, jelly bombs(in versus only), dinosaur who let you ride them, land mine bombs, boots, and those damn skulls. Even my younger cousins were able to learn to play this game in a matter of minutes.
There are different cool themed worlds to romp around in the adventure mode {Prehistoric, Samurai, Old West, Future, and Theme Park} with different dinosaur buddies to help you with your journey reminiscent of the ol' Turbo Graphics' Bomberman kangaroos. The dinos have different abilities {jump, dash, bomb flick, and a growl that stuns opponets, detonates bombs and reveals hidden goodies!}which grow as your points accumulate. The enemies are all interesting and cool and the bosses are quite a site to behold!!
The versus mode, ever die-hard bomberman fan's fav, is superve! The different areas are all fun to play on ( the soccer stadium is my favorite, which is ironic considering I don't especially care for the sport). There is even a code to vary each board in different ways increasing the replay value even further! You can choose the trusty white and black bomberman or a host of other Hudson Soft characters including Bonk and Master Higgins. Pesonally, I preferred the option on the Turbo G version of being able to select different varieties of bomberman such as normal, punk, cop, sumo, old man, ninja etc.
And if this wasn't enough, Hudson even included a cool bonus game where you blast your way through a temple to discover the true Way of the Bomb!
All in all, this is the finest Bomberman ever!!! Let us all hope and pray Hudson makes an even better version for one of the new systems!
This is Travis saying later!
