The Bottom Line: An old movie that has all the drama and laughs that you like.
The Black Swan is a pirate movie released in 1943, filmed in Cuba. You will find this movie is about 87 minutes long and you will enjoy every minute of it.
The characters of this movie are well drawn out. Jamie Waring is played by Tyrone Power. The Lady Margaret Denby is played by Maureen O'Hara. Captain Sir Henry Morgan is played by Laird Cregar. Tom Blue is played by Thomas Mitchell. Captain Billy Leech is played by George Sanders. Lord Denby is played by George Zucco. Roger Ingram is played by Edward Ashley. Wogan, Leech's second in command is played by Anthony Quinn. Who by the way is very young in this movie.
Captain Sir Henry Morgan is made Governor of Jamaica so he can clean the seas of all Pirates. The first thing Morgan does is call a meeting of all the Pirate captains, telling everyone that he is the Governor of Jamaica and is willing to give 100 acres of land to all Pirates who stop sinking ships and pirating. Captain Billy Leech will put up a fight. He doesn't trust Morgan any more, thinking Morgan has turned on his brother Pirates. Leech takes the Pirates loyal to him and sets sail to the seas.
All the captains that follow Morgan become members of his fleet to protect the seas against Pirates like Leech. Jamie Waring is a good friend to Morgan. The problems start when Jamie Waring falls in love with the Lady Margaret. However, Lady Margaret doesn't feel the same way. Jamie has a long rocky road ahead of him. In the meantime Roger Ingram has joined forces with Leech to get rich and cause Morgan trouble. Morgan sends Jamie and the other captains under him to catch Leech and his pirates.
I do not want to give away any details of the movie. For such an old movie you will find suspense as well as lots of laughs. The courtship between Lady Margaret and Jamie will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering how it will end. The Lady Margaret is very headstrong and a temper to match. You will also have to wait till the end of the movie to find out if Morgan stays Governor of Jamaica.
A little tid bit I picked up is that Leon Shamroy won an Oscar in 1943 for Best Cinematography, color. The movie was also nominated for Best Music, scoring of a drama or comedy as well as Best special effects. Sadly however, it did not win in either of these categories.
My personal opinion on this movie is that it is one you must see. Not only do I enjoy the movie but my seventeen year old daughter loves it. Now, that is a feat in it's own. She usually hates anything I like. The movies is full of drama and comedy. There is a lot of action and sword fights.
