Birds & Blooms Magazine

Birds & Blooms Magazine is a wonderful publication. It focuses on "the beauty in your own backyard." The pictures/photos are very high quality and there's little to no advertising throughout the whole magazine.

Readers are encouraged to write articles sharing their tips and tricks to beautiful flowers or how to attract certain birds to their gardens. As a writer I am working on several articles myself to submit to this magazine. It is very freelance friendly. The quality of work they publish though is high quality so therefore I am spending quite a bit of time researching my articles to make them the best they can be. They accept nonfiction essays, how-to articles, humorous and inspirational, and personal experience articles. They will not accept any bird rescue stories or captivity stories. They accept complete manuscripts, not just queries. Length of articles should be 250-1000 words, and they pay $100-$400.

Some of the columns in this magazine are Backyard Banter - which tells about odds and ends, and unique things; Bird Tales - stories about the birds in your backyard; Local Lookouts - backyard happenings around your community. Writers are welcome to submit to these columns as well. Articles run about 200 words, and payment is $50-$75.

Writing for this magazine requires a certain type of conversational ability - like you're chatting with your neighbor over the fence. I would love to be published in this magazine and I love reading it as well.

Birds & Blooms is a breath of fresh air. I love just relaxing and looking at all of the wonderful photos. I have tried myself to capture some hummingbirds and butterflies to try to send in. I also have some extraordinary photos of plants and flowers, and I'm working on writing articles about them.

This magazine is only published every other month. Too bad it can't be every month - 12 issues a year. If you have not seen this magazine, you really should check it out.
