Author's Review
When I wake up, well I know I'll be the man who wakes up next to you. When I go out, I know I'll will be the man who goes along with you. If I get drunk, well I know I'll be the one who gets drunk next to you, and if I haver, Yeah I know I'll be the man who's haverin' to you. But I will walk 500 miles and I will walk 500 more to be that man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door. Da Da Da Da Da, Da Da Da Da, Da Da Da Da.
When I'm lonely, Well I know I am going to be the one who's lonely without you. When I'm dreamin' Well I know I'm going to dream, I'm going to dream about the time when I'm with you. When I go out, When I go out, Well I know i'm going to be the man who goes along with you. When I come home, When I come home, Yes I know I'm going to be the man who is coming home to you.
But I will walk 500 miles and I will walk 500 more, to be the man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door.. Da Da Da Da, Da Da Da Da, Da Da Da Da, And I will walk 500 miles and I will walk 500 more just to be the man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door!
This is the song that played in the beginning and at the end of Benny & Joon. It is called I'm going to be (500 miles.) It is a wonderful song and fits very well to the movie.
The Cast:
Johnny Depp plays Sam a 26 year old illiterate man who watches old movies and dresses and acts like Buster Keaton.
Mary Steuart Masterson plays Joon Pearl a mentally ill woman who paints and reads and starts things on fire.
Aidan Quinn plays Benny Pearl who owns his own car garage and watches over his sister and takes very good care of her since their parents died.
Julianne Moore plays Ruthie who is a waitress and manager of an apartment.
Oliver Platt: plays Eric who is good friends with Benny and works in the garage with him.
The movie starts out Benny is at work, he owns his own garage named Benny's Car Clinic where he works on cars. Joon is at home painting driving the housekeeper crazy. The problem with housekeepers is that Joon keeps driving them away. Benny gets these housekeepers from a Doctor that he trusts.
This doctor keeps telling Benny that Joon belongs in a group home so she could be well taken care of. She even gives him a brochure of the group home. Benny is torn, he loves his sister so much and has been taking care of her since their parents died along time ago. He isn't sure if its the right thing for her.
Benny has no life, he doesn't have a personal life. All he does is work to provide for him and his sister, gives her meds when it's time to, and is really overprotective. His friend Eric tells him to tell Joon about the group home. Benny goes to a poker game that him and his friends sometimes have and takes Joon with him.
Benny is inside drinking beer and Joon decides she wants to play poker, The stakes are high, very high. One of the stakes were for Joon to take Sam into her home for awhile if she loses. Sam is the cousin of one of Benny's friends. Guess what? Joon loses the hand and she has to take Sam into her home.
Benny is not thrilled about this but alas he has to take him. Sam is a 26 year old illiterate magical man who acts and looks like Buster Keaton, who is a sweet and caring man and writes just fantastically. He doesn't even know he could write so impressively altho he can't read. Benny and Joon take him home and Sam watches Joon while Benny is at work. All 3 of them go to a diner to eat and that is where they meet the lovely Ruthie. She is a sweet lady that used to be an actress.
They all end up being friends altho Ruthie likes Benny and wants to be more than friends. My life is to complicated right now says Benny. What can Ruthie do but leave Benny alone. Sam and Joon end up being more than friends, They end up sleeping together and falling in love. Sam and Joon eventually tell Benny the truth and he is so livid that he kicks Sam out of the house while Joon tries to go and get him. I want him! I love him! says Joon. You are crazy! says Benny and shows her the brochure of the group home that he was torn about. I hate you! I hate you! says Joon and runs upstairs.
He goes up and she is laying in her bed. He asks her what she wants. She says she wants pudding. He goes to the diner where Ruthie works and asks for pudding, meanwhile Joon is burning a picture of her and Benny when they were kids and she sees Sam outside. She leaves with him and goes on the bus to go somewhere. (It's not clear where they go) and during the bus ride she starts to get voices in her head and she completely flippes out.
The bus has to stop and everybody has to get out. Joon is brought to a hospital and that same doctor who showed Benny the brochure of the group home won't let Benny and Sam anywhere near her. Benny is so frusturated at the situation that he insults Sam and tries to get to her to tell her that she does not belong their and that her living in her own apartment would be better.
Sam tries very hard to get to her too. He is outside climbing the hospital almost breaking his neck just to see her. Does Benny and Sam get to her? Or is it to late and they are forbidden to see her and she is stuck there forever? Do they both lose her? Watch this movie and see for yourself. You won't regret it!
This is a 1993 movie. I saw this movie April 25 1993 I was 18 years old. This movie depressed me because I never had someone who loved me so much that he would do almost anything for me. Sam loved Joon so much that he would do almost anything for her. He tried his hardest to get her from the hospital. Yes I had a high school boyfriend when I was 18 but he didn't treat me very well and that relationship ended. I never had that experience of the love that Sam and Joon shared.
Sam tried to protect her and be there for her. 2 months after my relationship ended I found someone! my second boyfriend! I finally got that experience! It was wonderful. It was the best 10 months of my life. Alas it ended but the memory and the experience will last a lifetime. If you never had this experience yet, well I hope you do. Yes falling in love is risky but love is worth it because you have great memories and a wonderful experience. It's an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.
This movie is so magical and I fell in love with the movie. It is so sad but yet very funny like for example when Sam, Benny, and Joon are at the diner and Sam grabs 2 potatoes and sticks a fork in each one so it looks like feet and makes them dance. What a riot! I laughed so hard! I own this movie now. This Movie does not make me depressed anymore. Great Cast Great Plot! I will cherish this movie for the rest of my life. Thank you Jeremiah for bringing us this wonderful and heart felt movie!
