Product Review

The way to go for remote detectors!

by   apdf ,   Jun 20, 2001

Pros:  Easy installation, Stealth mounting option, very effective.

Cons:  Can't easily read type of radar being detected in dark.

The Bottom Line:  cost effective radar detection that works! The only way to go in Canada, Virginia and Washington. Easy to use, and a snap to install.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

I recently won the Bel 915r off of ebay for $220. I've seen it retail for between $250-400, so I was extremely pleased with this price. It is a remote detector, and therefore of you live in Canada or any states where detectors are illegal this sort of unit is a must. I installed it into my 94 bmw 3 series with very little effort. The antenna its self was mounted behind the front right grill of my car. The front laser module was mounted behind the rear view mirror. I didn't even bother mounting the rear, because where I live (Toronto Canada)police use laser alot, and I've NEVER EVER seen them fire it from the rear. It is also fairly safe to say that by the time any detector picks up a laser the police already have your speed, so even if the front works you are likely to get pulled over anyways. I mounted the actual unit its self in the center console of the car, where it can be covered and is difficult to see.

I put the bel 915r to the test tonight, and it truly came through for me. I went out on a quest to sniff out police radar soley for the purpose of testing this unit. I had the unit on city mode, because I drove on city streets where I know police like to set up radar, as opposed to the highway. To make a long story short, as I drove down a suspect street everything was quiet until the bleep of an x band detection. Ample time in this case. As I approached closer to the hidden cruiser, the signal reached its peak and remained there as I drove quite far past the cruiser. I circled and tested again driving down the same strip, but this time in the other direction. Much stronger reading as I drove towards the front of the cruiser. Then the sirens went on and he busted someone. Bottom line is that this unit allows enough time for you to slow down when radar is detected. Laser is another story though. Don't get caught with laser!!!

Overall, I believe this is an effective radar detection unit. The controls are simple to use, and easy to read, minimal falsing, and it definitely works! My only complaint is that is very hard to read what type of radar is being detected at night. A minor detail though.
