Product Review

A Fun Car to Drive

by   williamsbk ,   Oct 12, 2008

Pros:  Good driving and average to good MPG.

Cons:  Plastic parts that make noise and leg room.

The Bottom Line:  I like driving this car and it rates high in the style points, however, if your tall this may not be a vehicle for you.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I have a Grand Prix which I drive as a work vehicle everyday. The best thing about the car is how fun it is to drive around town. It is small enough to scoot through traffic, with an engine that makes passing easy.

Handling:
The grand Prix is responsive and the tight turning radius helps in traffic. It's equipment includes anti-lock brakes and rack and pinion steering.

Performance:
The Grand Prix comes in three different engine options; A 5.8 L V-8 which is more horsepower than you would ever need, the 3.8 L 6 cylinder with the turbo charged feature and the 3800 (3.8) which is the one I have. It is rated at 200 HP which I assure you is enough to get your fair share of speeding tickets- if you don't watch your speedometer. It comes with 225/60R-16 tires which are wide enough to keep the car on the road, but not so big as to bankrupt you when you are ready for new tires. The car seems to hug the road, especially at higher speeds.

Comfort:
The interior is full of small features that make you quite comfortable. Six way power seats, adjustable delayed wipers, keyless entry, auto dimming rear view mirror, automatic light feature, a very good radio and CD player, power outside mirrors, and even On-Star.

For all of us that sometimes forget to pull the key from the ignition and lock the door, there is a lockout protection system. If the key is in the ignition it will disable the delayed locking and the door "should" not lock.

The gauges are easy to read and consists of: a Tachometer, Speedometer, Temperature. and Gas gauges. The controls are within easy reach and clearly marked.

There are plenty of places to put things with map pockets, glove box and a center console. (with an extra power plug inside) as well as drink holders.

Quality:
The car is solid, meaning it doesn't made unusual noises in the engine or transmission and overall is well made. However there are some noises from the plastic parts on the interior, especially when it is cold. Like wires hitting on the plastic parts around the steering wheel. The Grand Prix doesn't have good insulation surrounding the cabin, so there is road noise as well.

Gas Mileage:
I am required to keep track of my actual gas mileage every month. Most of the driving I do is in the city and I have between 24 or 25 mpg most months. If I go out of town or on longer trips the mileage is in the neighborhood of 26 to 28 mpg. Not bad for this car.

Overall:
This is a fun car to drive, however there is not a lot of extra leg room. Some of my friends are 6' 2" and have a hard time getting into the front seat and don't have enough leg room in the back seat. However for the rest of us normal people it is adequate. The noise is sometimes an issue and at times a good excuse for not listening to the wife. The Grand Prix is an attractive vehicle and is a pleasure to drive.
