Author's Review
I've had a hankering lately to hear the Man in Black sing "Ring of Fire." Not sure what brought it up, really. Just a dim memory of it being a masterful song, one that I haven't heard in quite some time.
So last night, I picked up this CD at the local Tar-zhey for $9.99. Before buying it, I checked out the list of songs. The one that sent me on the quest was there, along with a familar selection from my childhood--"I Walk the Line," "Daddy Sang Bass," "Boy Named Sue" and others. A well-rounded mix, I figured.
I'll be a dissenter here, however, and say this probably isn't the best Cash collection on the market. Sure, it's cheap, but you might want to spring a few more bucks and buy one that has better sound quality and, I'm guessing, better arrangements. The "Ring of Fire" here is a little brassier than a remember, moreso than to my tastes. A couple of other selections are like that--too much bauble and not enough Cash.
The problem with a lot of discount "greatest hits" collections is that the recordings often aren't cream of the crop for the artist. I think this is one of those cases, but diehard Cash fans may disagree. All I know is that I've heard better from the Man. I'm still shopping.
