Author's Review
I've been a computer consultant for about 8 years now, selling
various systems under different configurations.
Practically every system that I sold required a modem. Years
ago, the ONLY modems worth buying and popping into your system
were US Robotics...hands down. I for one had their external
award winner.
Many people tried to skimp and would buy the cheapest modem they
could find...and lo and behold, it wouldn't even work. Not in windows,
not in Linux, nothing. When they finally returned it and bought
a US Robotics....all was great.
Of course, US Robotics was bought by 3COM, so their expertise in
modems is now 3COM's. (I for one upgraded my external US Robotics to
the new 3COM version with the 56K capability.)
Now, when people buy a system from me...there's no contest. The
3COM 56K internal is the card I sell them. I protest if they
want another by telling them what problems I've had with other
modems, especially 'winmodems'.
Every time I've put this modem in a system, it has worked. Every time.
All flavours of Windows like it and drivers are readily found.
EVEN LINUX loves this modem. I've tried with other internal modems
under various types of Linux (slackware, Redhat), and I couldn't start
to describe the problems I had, especially with winmodems. This
3COM modem on the other hand, has presented no problems in Linux.
If you want a high quality modem, spend the few extra bucks and
buy this one. Don't skimp here 'cause chances are that you'll probably
return the cheaper one you might opt for and end up with this 3COM
anyway.
