Product Description

Akira Kurosawa's highly acclaimed film, set in feudal Japan, presents an intriguing tale of violent crime in the woods, told from the perspective of four different characters--a bandit (Toshirt Mifune), a woman (Machiko Kyt), her husband (Masayuki Mori), and a woodcutter (Takashi Shimura). Only two things about the incident seem to be clear--the woman was raped and her husband is now dead. However, the other elements radically differ as the four participants and/or witnesses relate their own stories (with the dead man, eerily enough, speaking through a medium). As each account is revealed, what seemed black and white turns to various hues of gray, leading to surprising--and confounding--relevations.

A landmark of international cinema, RASHOMON won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1951, bringing both Kurosawa--and Japanese film in general--to the attention of Western audiences. From the rain-soaked opening sequence to its moving conclusion, the film is a stunning exami...

Can You Believe Your Eyes? Rashomon

Date of Review:  Jan 30, 2007
The Bottom Line: Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon asks whether we can ever truly know the truth and remains a highly regarded film to this day.
Review: Rashomon (1950)

Akira Kurosawa is probably the most well-known Japanese film director outside of Japan. Active from the 1940s through the 1980s, he did his best work during the 50s and 60s, with Rashomon arguably his best work.

Akira Kurosawa';s -RASHOMON-1950 (Lost in the Woods)

Date of Review:  Aug 6, 2002
The Bottom Line: This classic Japanese movie is one that everyone must see, at least once. It is an Akira Kurosawa classic!
Review: Rashomon was a ground breaking film for Akira Kurosawa, and is even today one of the more interesting films you could view. Recently (March 2002) released in DVD in the Criterion Collection, it would make a terrific addition to any serious classic...

Criterion's superb edition of Kurosawa's legendary 1950 film

Date of Review:  Jul 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: Cinema at its finest
Review: "Rashômon," the 1950 adaptation of two stories by Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927) was the first Japanese film that I ever saw--two decades after putting Japan on the world cinema map at the 1951 Venice Film Festival, where it won not only the Golden...

Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon
5/5 stars
The original Vantage Point. Akira Kurosawa's masterful direction and storytelling puts the viewer in charge of the truth. The editing of this film plays a huge part in the outcome. Four people, four different points of view, one story - one truth. Who is lying? Is the camera lying to us? This is great introductory Kurosawa - watch this, then watch the rest

(12/01/2003, p.C5, Premiere Staff): "A look at RASHOMON's exquisite visuals makes it apparent that Sergio Leone's westerns were inspired by more than just Akira Kurosawa's plots."

Brimming with action while incisively examining the nature of truth, Rashomon is perhaps the finest film ever to investigate the philosophy of justice. Through an ingenious use of camera and flashbacks, Akira Kurosawa reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the story of a man s murder and the rape of his wife. Toshiro Mifune gives another commanding performance in the eloquent masterwork that revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema to the world.
