Product Description

Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi L?pez), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good an...

A Magical Realist Fairy Tale, and one of the Best of 2006: Pan's Labyrinth

Date of Review:  Dec 29, 2006
The Bottom Line: Mexico is having a surge of great, independent directors and their films. Here is one of the finest thriller/fantasy/dramas you'll see in a long while.
Review: The Spanish language Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) is one of the best films of 2006, a fabulous and moving mixture of fairy tale, realistic historical drama, fantasy and thriller. I've also seen the word "horror" attached to descriptions...

Ofelia's World

Date of Review:  Mar 29, 2007
The Bottom Line: A most rewarding journey through a maze of situations.
Review: Even though she was nearly a teenager, Ofelia still loved to read books filled with fantasies geared toward younger children. The world of those fantasies, and the beings that inhabit that world, come to life for Ofelia in 1944 Spain in Pan's...

Review: Pan's Labyrinth (2006)  Directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

A long time ago, in the underground realm, where there are no lies or pain, there lived a Princess who dreamed of the human world. She dreamed of blue skies, soft breeze, and sunshine...

A terrific film and a worthwhile collection to your library with all the extras on the disc
5/5 stars
This movie is just great. One of the best I saw in 2007 (came out late 2006). The disc is great too because it packs so much extra stuff. Over 2 hours in featurettes and a very nice picture in picture enhanced video commentary. Pros: Everything

Pan's Labyrinth
5/5 stars
Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured.
