Product Description

Terry Zwigoff finally follows up his 1994 breakout success, CRUMB, with this infectious, insightful, and ultimately sad look at teenage angst and boredom in suburbia that recalls such films as WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE and RUSHMORE as well as MTV's excellent DARIA series. The screenplay, written by Zwigoff and Daniel Clowes, is based on Clowes's underground comic book, GHOST WORLD. Best friends Enid and Rebecca have graduated from high school, and now they need to figure out what comes next. Rebecca gets a menial job at a coffee shop and starts looking for an apartment, while Enid wallows in her miserable (Daria-like) worldview, in which all jobs are sellouts and nearly all people are creeps, geeks, and losers. But when she plays a practical joke on the biggest dud of them all, Seymour, a lonely man who lives only for his collection of classic 78s, her life gets turned upside as she finds herself needing him in ways she never thought possible. Thora Birch (Enid) and Steve Buscemi (Seymour) are nothing sho...

This GHOST WORLD Is Flat and Garishly Colored -- But That's the Point!

Date of Review:  Jul 26, 2001
The Bottom Line: Despite the problems inherent in its subject and origins, I recommend GHOST WORLD to anyone who wishes to understand why the young of America feel so terribly alienated.
Review: I said to her: "We're not in San Francisco anymore, Mary Ann. We're in Marin County!" We had come on a Golden Gate coach to San Rafael for the Bay Area premiere of Terry Zwigoff's GHOST WORLD. The film's premise we learned is that we inhabit a...

Non-Conformists Are All The Same. And, Apparently They Really Are. Ghost World.

Date of Review:  Aug 2, 2002
The Bottom Line: One of the best things to come down the pike in a while. Perhaps not my choice for Best Picture, but between this and what won, I'd pick this.
Review: Suppose you were a 'grown-up', but nevertheless found yourself having to 'grow up'. Suppose further that as you 'grew up' you discovered that you weren't really a 'grown-up'. Sound like a cliched statement about all adolescents? Well, suppose even...

GHOST WORLD Teenage Malcontents = new cult film classic!!!

Date of Review:  Jul 22, 2001
The Bottom Line: It's a unique authentic and quirky film that is nearly perfect in every way possible. This review won't spoil the film for you.
Review: Ghost World is a film that's destined to have a strong and appreciative cult following. There's never been a film that has embraced teenage outcasts and malcontents as completely and truthfully while being almost free from audience pandering as this...
