Product Description

Unfortunately, Roy’s first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn’t been sinking his thumbs into Roy’s temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and–here’s the odd part–wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy’s trail. The chase introduces him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails.
Roy has most definitely arrived in Carl Hiaasen’s Florida.

Who Can Resist Cute Little Owls that Live in the Ground? Read Hoot!

Date of Review:  Jul 28, 2005
The Bottom Line: Hoot is a great book for all ages, and offers great characters, story line, and lessons learned.
Review: After reading Skinny Dip , I wasn t sure if I wanted to read another book by Carl Hiassen, but my co-worker highly recommended Hoot. Considering she had read both books, and told me it would appeal to my love of the environment, I thought I would...

What a Hoot!

Date of Review:  Sep 30, 2003
The Bottom Line: Well-suited for teenaged boys and girls alike, Hoot is a tale that gives kids a sense of the axiom "Think Globally, Act Locally."
Review: Being the new kid in town means that Roy Eberhardt automatically has a bull's-eye painted on his back for Trace Middle School's stable of playground and bus bullies. When fighting back against one overweight assailant gets him kicked off the school...

Woot for Hoot

Date of Review:  Oct 7, 2004
The Bottom Line: Hoot is cute!
Review: What do Florida, fluffy owls, and pancakes have in common? Plenty, at least according to Carl Hiaasen. Hoot introduces us to Roy Eberhardt, who has just moved to sunny Coconut Cove from Montana. This outdoorsy youngster can't quite get into the...

Professional Reviews

Publishers Weekly Annex: "Though readers will have few doubts about the success of the kids' campaign, several suspenseful scenes build to the denouement involving the sitcom-like unraveling of a muckity-muck at the pancake house. These, along with dollops of humor, help make the novel quite a hoot indeed."

First Line

Roy would not have noticed the strange boy if it weren't for Dana Matherson, because Roy ordinarily didn't look out the window of the school bus. He preferred to read comics and mystery books on the morning ride to Trace Middle.
