Product Description

When Barack Obama learns of the death of his African father, whom he hardly knew, he is compelled to trace his unusual family history. Obama, who became a nationally known figure in 2004 when he gave the keynote address at the Democratic Convention, writes movingly about being raised in Hawaii by his white mother. He goes on to describe his years at Harvard (where he was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review), his illuminating visit to family members in Kenya, and his work as a community activist in Chicago, where he eventually entered Illinois politics. While the book ends there, the rest is history. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama was inaugurated as President of the United States of America.

Listening to Barack Obama: "Dreams From My Father"

Date of Review:  Mar 31, 2007
The Bottom Line: It didn't make me cry, but it did make me think.
Review: Like most of you, the first time I heard of Barack Obama was when he gave the Keynote Address at the 2004 Democratic Convention. And like most of you, the first thing I thought was, "what the hell kind of name is that?" ...and then, like most of...

One of My Favorite Books Now

Date of Review:  Aug 26, 2008
The Bottom Line: Buy this book and you'll surely understand the next president of the USA
Review: This book really stays on point. It deals a lot with race, so someone may perceive it as fanatical. Yet, if it deals with the title I think it makes sense to have so much of the book about race. As a politician you never hear Barack Obama talk about...

Professional Reviews

Watkins, Paul, New York Times Book Review: "All men live in the shadow of their fathers--the more distant the father, the deeper the shadow. Barack Obama describes his confrontation with this shadow in his provocative autobiography. DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, and he also persuasively describes the phenomenon of belonging to two different worlds, and thus belonging to neither."

Audio - Compact Disc, Dreams from My Father
Includes the senator's speech from the 2004 Democratic National Convention! In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father-a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man-has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey-first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother's family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father's life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

Hardcover, Dreams from My Father
Nine years before the Senate campaign that made him one of the most influential and compelling voices in American politics, Barack Obama published this lyrical, unsentimental, and powerfully affecting memoir, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller when it was reissued in 2004. Dreams from My Father tells the story of Obama's struggle to understand the forces that shaped him as the son of a black African father and white American mother-a struggle that takes him from the American heartland to the ancestral home of his great-aunt in the tiny African village of Alego. Obama opens his story in New York, where he hears that his father-a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man-has died in a car accident. The news triggers a chain of memories as Barack retraces his family's unusual history: the migration of his mother's family from small-town Kansas to the Hawaiian islands; the love that develops between his mother and a promising young Kenyan student, a love nurtured by youthful innocence and the ...
