My job in computer animation and graphics design demands the use of Macs to run the programs. So I first heard of MacMall in 1997 from the company that I work with. I was free to order anything that is needed to help me with my projects. At first the place was all right. Pretty good with deliveries, nice selection and prices were not bad.
You can shop and order online on their website. Pretty simple to navigate the site and they do offer rebates. However I've had a couple problems with their rebates in the past (they said they never got it). After you've made an order you can also check the status of your order online.
So everything was ok until this recent experience.
I work at home as well doing photo retouch for a high profile company. I decided that it was time for my G4 to retire and I also wanted the option of taking my work out of my room and be able to lounge in a cafe. Anyways I decided to get the Apple 17" Powerbook so as usual I turned to MacMall for all my Mac needs. I had to order from a new sales rep this time because the one I usually talk to is off. The special on my item is a free Lexmark printer and carrying case.
$1984.00 and 2 days later FedEx brought me my goodies. When I looked at the box I was a little concerned to see that the clear circle sticker that seals the box has been overlapped by a bigger one (hence someone opened it and reclosed it). I thought maybe the sticker was bad and they put another one on it..no big deal..or was it? When I opened the box I saw that there were fingerprints all over the top of the laptop and screen! Not only that there were little scuff marks on top of the laptop. I was appalled that they gave me a opened item.
So I called to speak to the guy that sold it to me and complained about how the item was opened. He assured me that it wasn't and I had to argue about the sticker and the fingerprints. He told me that he has no authority to refund or exchange my item and that the supervisor will not be in till Monday....which was 2 days later.
First thing Monday morning I called and spoke with the supervisor he claims that they don't sell open items. I told him that I either want a full refund or a exchange for a new one...he refused. After speaking with him and waiting for him to call me back after he gets authorization etc. the phone battle lasted 2 days. Finally he got FedEx's courier service to pick the box up. The company has decided to take the item back to "analyze it". I got the call about it the next day with them saying that it is fine and has never been used. So I got it back. I was still a little ticked off at the fact that they would not exchange it for me, but I sucked it up and got started on my project.
I thought everything was over with when 4 days later I got a bill for FedEx asking me to pay for the return service that MACMALL asked for! I was so mad! How are they going to make me pay for the courier service when it was their fault in the first place? I'm not going to pay it or will I ever shop there again! How are they going to treat a long term customer like that? The Better Business Bureau will be hearing from me.
