I purchased an Ascend(r) air mattress with my then fiance in October 2008. We were interested in another brand name provider, but found their pricing prohibitive. We got the king size model. I spent about a month reading about different mattress models and looking for something that would last us a good while.
Ordering - The website layout is not set up the same as a standard retail site (i.e. Amazon) so I read carefully. I did not have trouble placing the order or receiving the verification emails.
Delivery - The mattress was delivered by a freight shipper and I had to schedule a time for someone to be home to receive delivery. This is not complete setup, etc, etc, it's just to the door delivery. I had read the details carefully, so I knew this in advance. This was a specific time appointment (give or take 15 minutes) not one of those "We'll be there between 8am and 2pm" deals. I was quite satisfied with the delivery.
Setup - As indicated on the website, you have to assemble this bed. Well.. with the king size, I definitely suggest having 2 people to do the setup. The foam (especially the natural latex) pieces are big and heavy. They tend to flop around and are awkward to maneuver. I watched the assembly video several times and had it ready as I was going through the steps. The assembly was simple in theory, just difficult to put in to practice for me working alone. It took me approximately 2 hours to get the bed together. Having a second person would have cut that time at least in half. I can tell the whole setup, from arranging the foam layers to plugging in the pump hoses is designed to be straight forward.
Product in Action - I couldn't be happier. Right after we got it, my now husband set the firmness way up on his side and I set the firmness way down on my side. We have both gone through temporary bouts of back pain for various reasons, but turning the firmness up seems to reduce the length and severity of the pain. I sleep very well on this bed. I'm a fairly light sleeper, so I can't say I always sleep all the way through the night, but I do drift off again much more easily. The foam layers are very soft and inviting but my husband says he can still get the firmness he wants. The king size bed is 2 twin air bladders under the foam layers. Other than the large difference in firmness, I have never found the bed to sag or feel different along the center line.
Pumps - The pumps are not "whisper quiet". You could probably let air out without waking me, but I doubt you could run the pump to increase the firmness without waking me. My husband would probably sleep through either. The digital controls are simple and easy to work when fumbling in the dark.
Other notes - I noticed they are still sending a "free protect-a-bed" cover. This is essentially a fitted sheet with a (relatively) soft fabric top and a water proof backing. It protects just the top of the bed from spills and stains. This bonus is a wonderful compliment to the bed. After almost a year of use and more than one accident involving liquid, the mattress itself is still pristine. I have not found that the cover rustles when you move on top of it. I have not found that I notice the cover at all. One bad side to it is that since water does not pass through it, the king size needs 2 runs through a standard size washing machine. A larger washer would probably not have trouble.
I would, and have, recommended this bed and company to friends and family.
