Full review
In late December 2004, I ordered a Tempur-pedic mattress set (king size deluxe) from Habitat Futons. I had done a bit of research on different mattresses, and knew that this was exactly what I wanted before I decided where to buy. I love the mattress, but that isn't the subject of this review -- I am here to talk about the service I received from Habitat Futons.
I found Habitat Futons by searching on the internet, and was drawn by the BBB membership and the large amount of information on their website about the mattress itself and their service. I also did some online research to satisfy myself that Habitat Futons really existed and was more than "just a website." Actual "bricks and mortar" actually back up what you see on the internet. Not that i-commerce sites aren't OK, but in this case I felt I needed more. I don't hesitate to buy items from, say, Amazon or ebay, but this isn't a book, it is a very expensive mattress.
There were plenty of places that I could have bought the mattress locally, but they weren't offering free delivery or no sales tax. (Habitat Futons is not in the same state where I live, and when you buy out-of-state, a business doesn't have to charge the state sales tax). Sales tax here is 8.25%, so on a king size deluxe set, that amounts to quite a bit of pocket change!
It was also very helpful that, when contacting Habitat by e-mail, the response was directly from the owner, Marc Anderson. When I called to talk to them on the phone, it was answered directly by Marc as well. Even though it was between Christmas and New Years, he was there answering the phone himself. I expected an employee or salesperson, but instead Marc was right there -- responsive, knowledgeable, and very easy to reach.
In regards to the service, Marc promised the mattress in two weeks, and that is exactly when it arrived. Something so precise is not easy to promise, especially since he cannot control a third-party trucking service after the mattress leaves his warehouse. The trucking service was also very good. They called 3 days ahead of time to set up a delivery time (between 2 and 4 in the afternoon), and they showed up at 2pm on the dot!
If I can offer one piece of advice to those of you considering this mattress purpose, then it would be this: I was very anxious to get my new mattress, and chose expedited delivery. My husband and I are healthy and are not weaklings, but a king size deluxe was almost too much for us to handle alone. We did manage, but it was tough. If you are ordering one of the "bigger ones," consider either being a little more patient and waiting for the full service option (no extra charge) or invite some friends over to help!
