Tondre Grapefield was initially planted in 1997 to Dijon clones 777 & 115 on rootstock 3309. The planting density is 1075 plants per acre, with rows on a NW-SE orientation. Yields are restricted to 3.5 tons per acre. Soils consist of decomposed granite, gravel, and sandy loam. The 2005 vintage was outstanding, with cool, even temperatures producing a high quality crop. The Pinot Noir harvest started on September 9th and finished on October 24th. The extended growing season produced fine, fully mature fruit, with a graceful style and very clear expression of the Santa Lucia Highlands terroir. The grapes are completely de-stemmed. Fermentation, most of which is whole-berry, is in open top fermenters with manual punch down for optimum extraction and structure with soft tannins. Her portrait was used on several varieties of 1877 pattern half dollars. Following the passage of the Bland-Allison Act in early 1878, the Mint rushed to put a new silver dollar design into production. Morgan's design, based on one used in a pattern half dollar of the year before, was selected. Morgan dollars were first struck for circulation in 1878. Morgan's obverse features a left-facing portrait of Miss Liberty. The reverse depicts a somewhat scrawny eagle, which led some to vilify the coin as a buzzard dollar.
